Several hospital and expansion projects are underway in South Carolina, the fastest-growing U.S. state.
The state recorded a population growth rate of 1.5%, increasing by 79,958 residents between July 1, 2024, and July 1, 2025, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau released Jan. 27.
Becker’s has reported on 11 hospital projects in South Carolina that were unveiled or advanced in the past year. Three of the projects involve Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health, and three involve Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Health.
1. Beaufort (S.C.) Memorial hosted a topping-off ceremony Dec. 4 for the 28-bed, $103 million Bluffton Community Hospital. The hospital, set to open in early 2027, will include a full-service emergency department, surgery center and inpatient acute nursing unit.
2. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Hospital Authority Board of Commissioners in December approved a proposal for Atrium Health Fort Mill in South Carolina, a $450 million hospital campus. It will include a 60-bed hospital with four operating rooms and 15 emergency bays, as well as a medical office building with inpatient, outpatient, emergency and ancillary services. Site preparation is slated to begin in 2026, with service expected to be offered by mid-2029.
3. Construction of Beauford (S.C.) Memorial’s new hybrid emergency and urgent care facility on Hilton Head Island began in November. It is a $16.6 million project in partnership with Dallas-based Intuitive Health and Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Health. It will include five emergency exam rooms, five urgent care exam rooms, one triage room and one trauma room.
4. Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Health broke ground on a new hospital and medical office pavilion in Indian Land, S.C., in September. The project includes a medical office building, set to open in 2026, and MUSC Health Indian Land Medical Center, a 50-bed hospital, which will open in 2027.
5. Greenville, S.C.-based Prisma Health began construction in fall 2025 on a $350 million expansion at Greer (S.C.) Memorial Hospital, which will increase its bed count from 93 to 175. The project, set to be completed in early 2028, will include building a $100 million medical office building and a three-story hospital tower.
6. Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health’s certificate-of-need application for a 20-bed hospital in Greenville, S.C., was approved in June. The outpatient-focused hospital will offer services including specialty and surgical care.
7. Charleston, S.C.-based Roper St. Francis Healthcare broke ground on a $1.2 billion hospital in North Charleston, S.C., in June. It is slated to be completed in 2029 and will replace the system’s current downtown Charleston hospital.
8. Prisma Health began construction on a $138 million behavioral health hospital in Easley, S.C., in May. It will include 112 beds and replace the system’s existing 65-bed Marshall I. Pickens Hospital. The project is set to be completed in 2027.
9. MUSC Health received approval in April to build a new cancer hospital and ASC in Charleston. The cancer hospital is set to be completed by 2030, and the outpatient facility is set to open by 2028.
10. Novant Health broke ground on an emergency department and medical office building in Bluffton, S.C., in April, which is set to open in spring 2026. The system also plans to build a $320 million hospital there, and groundbreaking is expected in summer or fall 2026.
11. Novant Health received certificate-of-need approval to build a 50-bed, $320 million hospital in Bluffington, S.C. The hospital is expected to open in 2028.
