University Hospitals nets US 1st with quality management certifications

Press Release

University Hospitals, a Cleveland-based system with 21 hospitals, recently became the first U.S. health system to attain ISO 9001 certification, a globally recognized standard for quality management, at its corporate headquarters.

UH is also the first Ohio health system to achieve the certification for all its hospitals, according to an April 21 University Hospitals news release. ISO 9001 recognizes an organization’s commitment to quality management across various industries. The International Organization for Standardization does not issue ISO 9001; rather, independent certification organizations such as DNV Healthcare grant the certifications.

“With more than one million certificates issued to organizations in 189 countries, ISO 9001 is the most widely used quality management standard in the world,” according to the International Organization for Standardization

A few other healthcare organizations have achieved this certification in recent years, including SGMC Health, a four-hospital system based in Valdosta, Ga., and Access Health, a revenue cycle management provider. Others, such as Norfolk, Va.-based Sentara Health, have used the ISO 9001 quality system to redesign patient safety policies.
