Struggling California hospital charts financial path forward

Press Release

The Palo Verde Healthcare District said Blythe, Calif.-based Palo Verde Hospital’s financial outlook has been stabilized after it received the majority of intergovernmental transfer funds, with the remainder expected soon.

“Over the past several months, the board of directors of the Palo Verde Healthcare District, alongside our staff and expert consultants, has worked diligently and with unwavering commitment to safeguard the future of Palo Verde Hospital,” Carmela Garnica, president of the

Palo Verde Healthcare District, said in a news release shared with Becker’s. “This has been an extraordinarily challenging period, and each decision was made under significant financial constraints and operational pressure.”

In late February, the district’s board approved a 180-day emergency department stabilization plan through a management services agreement with Riverside County (Calif.).

The Riverside University Health System assumed temporary operational control of the hospital’s ED and clinics under the plan, which included a $1 million county loan and a county-led strike team deployed on-site Feb. 23.

The plan came after the hospital nearly closed in early January due to lack of funding. The Palo Verde Healthcare District will remain the licensed operator and retain all regulatory responsibilities, and hospital employees will keep their district jobs.

“There is still significant work ahead,” Ms. Garnica said. “The county’s 180-day stabilization period will provide an  opportunity for a comprehensive assessment and recommendations regarding the hospital’s long term future. The board remains committed to transparency and accountability, and to ensuring that Palo Verde Hospital continues to serve the Palo Verde Valley. Now, we move forward together with renewed resolve, hope and determination.”
