David Zaas, MD, has been named CEO of Durham, N.C.-based Duke University Health System, effective May 1, according to a March 25 news release shared with Becker’s.
Dr. Zaas returns to Duke after serving as president and CEO of Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and executive vice president of health affairs for Wake Forest University. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is part of Charlotte, N.C.-based Advocate Health.
Dr. Zaas previously spent nearly two decades at Duke Health, from 2001 to 2020, where he held leadership roles including president of Duke Raleigh Hospital and chief medical officer of the Duke Private Diagnostic Clinic, according to the release.
At Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, he oversaw a $6.5 billion academic health system with more than 27,000 team members and eight hospitals, according to the release. He also previously served as CEO of the Charleston division of Charleston-based Medical University of South Carolina Health and system chief clinical officer.
In his new role, Dr. Zaas will oversee strategy and operations for Duke University Health System and its senior leadership team. He succeeds Craig Albanese, MD, who left Duke to join Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente as president of integrated care and coverage.
