10,000-nurse Corewell Health union green-lights strike

Press Release

Registered nurses at Corewell Health East hospitals in southeast Michigan, represented by Teamsters Local 2024, have voted to authorize a strike amid ongoing contract negotiations.

The union represents about 10,000 nurses across nine hospitals and campuses, according to a March 17 Teamsters news release. Corewell Health has dual headquarters in Grand Rapids and Southfield, Mich. Corewell Health East includes facilities in Dearborn, Farmington Hills, Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak, Taylor, Trenton, Troy, Wayne, Livonia and Southfield.

Nearly 90% of participating union members voted to authorize a strike after negotiating a labor contract since June 2025, according to Teamsters. The union said nurses are seeking safe nurse-to-patient ratios, fair wages, affordable health insurance and improved workplace safety.

In the release, Rachel Szadyr, BSN, RN, a cardiac ICU nurse and member of the bargaining committee, said the vote reflects frustration among nurses over working conditions and staffing pressures.

“This overwhelming strike vote shows that nurses are done being bullied into silence while executives put profits over patients and gamble with our safety and our licenses,” she said.

Nurses voted to join Teamsters in November 2024. The union alleges Corewell management withheld some economic benefits provided to nonunion employees, including pull pay, and ended a student loan repayment program.

In a statement shared with Becker’s, Corewell Health said it cares about its nurses and “has made significant investments in wages and benefits.”

“The results of the strike authorization vote will not change our approach, and we believe talk of a strike is premature,” Corewell said. “Neither side has made a final offer, and we will continue to bargain in good faith.”
