State health officials extend RSV vaccination season

Press Release

A majority of states, territories and major cities in the U.S. are extending their immunization season for respiratory syncytial virus, according to an April 2 report from the Association of Immunization Managers.

Of the 66 jurisdictions surveyed by the association, 48 are extending their season through April 30 or have not set an end date.

Four jurisdictions — Louisiana, Missouri, Virginia and Washington, D.C. — are not extending their season, though Virginia and Missouri will allow case-by-case consideration.

This year’s RSV season peaked later than usual, according to an April 2 news release from the American Academy of Pediatrics. During the week ending March 21, 7.5% of tests were positive for RSV, compared to 5% during the same time last year.

CDC data on respiratory virus activity shows that influenza and COVID-19 are dropping off across most states, while RSV is high or very high in nine states.
