Orlando (Fla.) Health plans to acquire Anniston, Ala.-based RMC Health System, continuing its push into Alabama.
In October 2024, Orlando Health acquired Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare’s 70% ownership stake in Birmingham, Ala.-based Brookwood Baptist Health — a five-hospital, 1,700-bed system — for about $910 million, effective Oct. 1. Orlando Health manages day-to-day operations of the system in partnership with Baptist Health.
RMC is a nonprofit health system that includes a 375-bed medical center, outpatient facilities and specialty practices serving patients throughout Northeast Alabama. The system employs nearly 2,000 team members and 200 physicians across a broad range of specialties.
Once the transaction closes — expected this fall — RMC will join Orlando Health’s Alabama Region alongside Baptist Health.
Orlando Health said it is committed to investing significant resources over the next five years to enhance RMC’s facilities, equipment and technology, including implementation of an electronic health record system.
“Together, we look forward to investing in excellent services that will benefit the region, partnering with physicians, purposefully growing and becoming the best place to work,” David Strong, president and CEO of Orlando Health, said in an April 7 news release.
RMC CEO Keith Parrott said the partnership with Orlando Health was a deliberate strategic choice.
“What excites us most about the partnership with Orlando Health is their proven ability to accelerate and strengthen growth and performance initiatives, and their demonstrated success in markets facing challenges similar to those at RMC,” Mr. Parrott said.
Anniston Mayor Ciara Smith-Roston framed the acquisition as an opportunity to strengthen RMC’s role as a regional referral destination.
“The vision is to shape this hospital into a true referral center for Northeast Alabama, adding services, recruiting physicians and continuing to build trust with the community to provide high-quality, compassionate care close to home,” Ms. Smith-Roston said. “Orlando Health brings essential resources and experience to help us achieve our goals.”
Orlando Health is a nonprofit integrated academic system with $14 billion of assets under management, serving Florida, Alabama and Puerto Rico. It has more than 5,450 beds and operates 25 hospitals, according to its website.
