North Star to cut additional jobs

Press Release

Ogdensburg, N.Y.-based North Star Health Alliance has shared plans to further reduce its workforce as part of restructuring efforts after cutting more than 100 clinical, nonclinical and management positions in late January.

The restructuring changes include leadership, operations and the alignment of services “to help reduce expenses while maintaining safe, reliable care,” the health system said in a March 20 news release shared with Becker’s.

North Star could not reveal the number of employees or roles affected to Becker’s.

The health system, which sought bankruptcy protection in early February, has been working with the New York State Department of Health, including its Financially Distressed Hospital Bureau, to improve financial performance and stabilize operations.

“This is a difficult but necessary step as we move through the Chapter 11 process and continue strengthening our organization for the future,” North Star Health Alliance CEO Andrew Manzer said in the release. “Our focus remains on strengthening the organization so we can continue delivering high-quality care close to home.”

North Star also shared in mid-March that it anticipated the state health department to help with short-term funding to meet payroll for the week of March 16. Since fiscal year 2022, the department has provided North Star with more than $170 million to support payroll and additional needs.

The health system’s facilities remain open and will continue to provide care.
“Leadership remains engaged with clinical teams, employees and state partners as part of ongoing restructuring efforts designed to stabilize operations and position the organization for long-term success,” the release said.
