Hennepin to cut 100 jobs amid service line restructuring

Press Release

Minneapolis-based Hennepin Healthcare is making service line changes that will result in the elimination of about 100 positions, citing a broader effort to stabilize its finances and protect core clinical services.

The health system said Jan. 26 it will close or integrate several stand-alone clinics and services, including chiropractic and acupuncture, with patients referred to external providers.

It also plans to transition care for older adults to primary care locations and shift nursing home services to other health systems. Additionally, Hennepin will close its sleep clinic, though screening tests will continue through primary care.

Other planned changes include:

  • Transitioning treatments for interventional pain to primary care, with other interventional services referred externally.
  • Reducing medical and surgical weight management services and integrating them into the Clinic and Specialty Center, rather than operating as a stand-alone clinic.

The workforce reduction comes as the health system works to identify at least $50 million in savings during the first quarter of 2026.

In a Jan. 16 email to employees shared with Becker’s, co-interim administrators J. Kevin Croston, MD, and David Hough said the system’s cash position fell below zero in early January, requiring the use of a county line of credit to meet payroll. They said reliance on county backstop funding is not sustainable and that tens of millions of dollars more in savings could be needed by year-end.
