Healthcare CHRO appointments buck broader hiring trends

Press Release

Internal leaders stepping into the CHRO role for the first time continued to account for most global appointments in 2025, according to a recent report from Russell Reynolds Associates.

The firm’s CHRO Turnover Index analyzes CHRO appointments and exits across 1,853 companies worldwide, including those in the S&P 500.

However, of the 11 hospital and health system CHRO appointments Becker’s reported on in 2025, two involved internal leaders.

Others joined from different health systems — including Ryan Miller, who joined Minot, N.D.-based Trinity Health from KSB Hospital in Dixon, Ill., in January 2025 — and from other organizations. Lauren Gordon, for example, was named CHRO of Philadelphia-based Temple Health after serving as chief people officer at ConcertAI, a company that offers generative AI solutions.

Here are four things to know from the report:

1. In total, 155 CHROs were appointed globally, up from 124 in 2024 — a 25% year-over-year increase. Among the 110 healthcare organizations included in the report, eight CHROs were appointed in 2025.

2. First-time CHROs accounted for 60% of incoming CHROs in 2025, compared to 65% in 2024.  In the S&P 500, first-time CHRO appointments reached a seven-year high at 63% in 2025, up from 57% the previous year.

3. Most first-time CHRO appointments came from internal promotions. Forty-five percent of all appointments were first-time internal CHRO promotions in 2025, up from 35% in 2024. Externally hired first-time CHROs accounted for 15% of 2025 appointments, down from 28% in 2024.

In healthcare, five CHRO appointments were internal and three were external, according to the report.

4. The average CHRO tenure was 5.2 years in 2025, up from 4.4 years in 2023 and 4.2 years in 2021.
