HCA acquires 13 urgent care centers, 6 freestanding EDs

As Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare continues to grow its Florida freestanding emergency department and outpatient footprint nationally, the health system is also expanding its urgent care center and freestanding ED footprint across Texas through two of the system’s subsidiaries. 

HCA’s Dallas-based Medical City Healthcare said Feb. 2 that it has acquired 13 CommunityMed urgent care centers to serve under CareNow Urgent Care. 

Medical City Healthcare comprises 22 North Texas hospitals, nine off-campus emergency rooms, 15 ambulatory surgery centers and 16,500 employees, according to its website

The system’s CareNow Urgent Care subsidiary now operates more than 95 sites across Texas following the acquisition and brings HCA Healthcare’s urgent care presence to more than 340 locations nationwide, according to a Feb. 2 news release shared with Becker’s

The Texas urgent care locations are in Arlington, Bartonville, Crossroads, Haslet, Heath, Mansfield, Melissa, Midlothian, Princeton, Prosper and Wichita Falls, marking a new Medical City Healthcare market, the release said.

Employees who are in good standing at the centers were transitioned to Medical City Healthcare. The acquisition cost has not been disclosed. 

In a separate transaction, HCA’s Austin, Texas-based St. David’s HealthCare also acquired six Austin-based emergency center locations Feb. 1, bringing its freestanding emergency center footprint in Central Texas to 13. The acquisition cost was also not disclosed. 

The facilities are now clinically integrated with and under the leadership of certain St. David’s HealthCare hospitals, according to a Feb. 2 news release shared with Becker’s. They were acquired from ZT Corporate, which owned and operated the facilities under its Altus Community Healthcare portfolio.

The acquisition comprises St. David’s Emergency Center—Anderson Mill in Austin; St. David’s Emergency Center—Arboretum in Austin; St. David’s Emergency Center—Wells Branch in Pflugerville, Texas; St. David’s Emergency Center—East Riverside in Austin; St. David’s Emergency Center—South Lamar in Austin; and St. David’s Emergency Center—Mueller in Austin. 

“As our population grows, local emergency rooms continue to see high patient volumes,” David Huffstutler, president and CEO of St. David’s HealthCare, said in the release. “These acquisitions are strategically designed to ease pressure on large medical centers and expand access to high-quality emergency care closer to home for Central Texans.”

St. David’s HealthCare comprises nine hospitals and more than 12,600 employees across 190 care sites. It’s also a partnership between HCA and the St. David’s Foundation and the Georgetown Health Foundation, two local nonprofits, the release said.
