CVS Health plans to open more pharmacies than it closes in 2026, signaling a shift after several years of store reductions, Bloomberg reported March 30.
The company expects to open about 60 stores this year, including nearly 20 smaller, pharmacy-only locations, while closing a few dozen sites, spokesperson Amy Thibault said.
The first of its pharmacy-only locations opened March 30 in Chicago. The smaller format is part of a broader strategy to focus on healthcare services and reduce reliance on front-of-store retail. Early locations are expected to average less than 5,000 square feet.
The move builds on a multiyear effort to reshape CVS’ pharmacy footprint and expand access to care. The company has been testing smaller formats in underserved areas while continuing to adjust its store base in response to changing demand.
The strategy also reflects patient preferences for in-person care. About 80% of patients prefer face-to-face pharmacy services, and 84% view pharmacies as credible sources of healthcare, according to CVS’ 2025 “Rx Report.”
CVS is also adapting its pharmacy model as reimbursement pressures persist. The company is working to shift payment structures and expand service offerings as part of a broader effort to stabilize pharmacy operations and support long-term growth, according to Bloomberg.
