Corewell proposes 180-bed hospital expansion project

Press Release

Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Corewell Health has announced conceptual plans to expand its Butterworth Hospital campus with a 621,000 square-foot facility that would include a new emergency department and 180 private beds.

The proposed project would also include 12 to 16 operating rooms, according to a Jan. 21 news release from the health system.

Over the past year, Butterworth Hospital’s average patient census has been more than 90%, according to the release.

“As our community grows and ages, the need for medical care is steadily increasing and we want to make sure we are providing the best care for our neighbors throughout the region,” said Josh Kooistra, DO, president of Corewell Health in West Michigan.

An emphasis will be placed on modernization, with the creation of larger, more comfortable private rooms that can accommodate new technologies and equipment. A multi-place hyperbaric chamber and additional overflow beds are also planned.

Two locations in Grand Rapids are being considered for the project. Both have existing Corewell facilities that are aging. Services would be relocated ahead of their proposed demolition.

Dr. Kooistra said in the release that the project is still in the early planning process and many details have yet to be determined.
