Cleveland Clinic taps AI operations platform

Press Release

Cleveland Clinic has partnered with automation startup Luminai to reduce administrative burden and allow caregivers to focus more on patients, Forbes reported.

Their first use case will focus on streamlining referrals, which often still arrive via fax, according to the April 9 story. Luminai’s AI agents will process incoming documents to determine whether they’re referrals, retrieve clinical and administrative data, and route them to the appropriate department. When confidence scores fall below a certain level, the AI passes the work to human staff to complete.

“Patient experience is directly shaped by how efficiently and reliably administrative processes operate behind the scenes,” Rohit Chandra, PhD, executive vice president and chief digital officer of Cleveland Clinic, told the news outlet. “Our goal is to use AI to make these processes more efficient.”

Luminai also closed on a $38 million series B investment, which included participation from health system-owner General Catalyst, bringing its total funding to $60 million. The startup includes former staffers of Phoenix-based Banner Health, Epic and Google.
