An incident compromised a Children’s Minnesota staff member’s email account and was used to send fraudulent messages.
The organization said the breach occurred April 9, when the account was accessed by an unauthorized party and used to distribute emails that appeared to come from the employee. Some messages carried subject lines such as “Sponsorship Document,” according to an email notification shared with Becker’s.
Children’s Minnesota urged anyone who received the email not to interact with it and to delete it immediately. Recipients who may have clicked links, opened attachments or entered login credentials were advised to contact Children’s Minnesota’s IT department and follow security guidance.
The organization said it secured the affected account and launched a formal investigation into the incident.
“The incident was immediately contained by our IT security team,” a spokesperson for Children’s Minnesota told Becker’s. “Based on our investigation to date, we do not believe any sensitive information was accessed or that any systems were compromised as a result of this incident.”
