Montrose Regional, Colorado hospital explore partnership

Montrose (Colo.) Regional Health has signed a letter of intent with Grand Junction, Colo.-based Community Hospital to explore the creation of a tax-exempt, nonprofit entity to improve healthcare across western Colorado and eastern Utah.

The proposed entity would let the two parties collaborate on specific nonclinical functions, like information technology alignment, group purchasing, long-term planning and revenue cycle optimization, according to a March 9 news release.

Montrose Regional and Community Hospital would remain independent, locally governed, tax-exempt and nonprofit organizations under the proposed entity.

“We are excited about how this collaboration would strengthen this commitment, championing a competitive healthcare landscape while increasing access and affordability for providers, patients and communities,” Jeff Mengenhausen, CEO of Montrose Regional Health, said in the release.

The parties aim to reach a definitive agreement later this fall and finalize details by the end of 2026.

Community Hospital is a 60-bed, acute care facility that features a level 3 trauma center. The full-service facility offers full outpatient diagnostic services and inpatient care.

Montrose Regional Health is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) health system that comprises a 75-bed hospital with a level 3 trauma center, an ambulatory care center and Montrose Regional Medical Group outreach clinics.

“The people we serve remain our top priority and are a key reason we are exploring this partnership,” Chris Thomas, president and CEO of Community Hospital, said in the release. “This potential collaboration would stimulate economic growth and strengthen healthcare opportunities for our community, improving quality and choice for patients and employees alike.”
