Mayo Clinic: Platform approach better for research than EHRs

Mayo Clinic Platform supports clinical research and AI development more effectively than traditional EHRs, according to researchers at the Rochester, Minn.-based health system.

The Feb. 16 study in npj Health Systems demonstrated the capabilities of Mayo Clinic Platform, a cloud-based data and analytics ecosystem with over 15 million deidentified patient records, by simulating clinical trials and predicting disease states with AI and deep learning.

“[Mayo Clinic Platform] enables broader accessibility and standardization compared to institutional EHRs, positioning it as a powerful platform for advancing translational research and precision medicine,” the authors concluded.

The advantages of Mayo’s approach include availability to external researchers, built-in analytics tools, and data harmonization for cross-organization comparisons, the researchers wrote.
