The Indiana Board of Pharmacy has rejected a proposed settlement with Muncie, Ind.-based Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital, part of Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health, tied to a drug diversion case, the Indiana Capital Chronicle reported April 14.
The agreement would have fined the hospital $44,000 and placed its pharmacy license on probation. Board members said the penalty did not reflect the scope of the diversion, which spanned 44 months from November 2020 to July 2024.
The case involves a former pharmacist accused of diverting nearly 317,000 milligrams of hydromorphone, 41,390 milligrams of methadone and 290 milligrams of morphine. Hospital officials said the total value of the drugs was $121,893, according to the Chronicle.
Despite rejecting the settlement, the board unanimously renewed the hospital’s pharmacy license and directed the Indiana attorney general’s office to proceed with a formal complaint, allowing the facility to continue operating while the case advances.
The board is expected to take up the case at a full administrative hearing later this summer, the report said.
