Hoag to launch transplant center in 2027

Newport Beach, Calif.-based Hoag named Aaron Ahearn, MD, PhD, surgical director for its liver and kidney transplant program.

The program builds off Hoag’s liver and pancreas program and has been five years in development, according to a March 27 system news release. The program is expected to launch in early 2027, pending regulatory approval.

Dr. Ahearn’s appointment is the next step to establishing the program. He joins Hoag from USC Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles.

Currently there are no liver transplant programs in Orange County, despite the county having a population of 3.1 million, the release said. Hoag is one of the few hospitals in the region that offers coordinated pre- and post-transplant care.
