Patients taking blood thinner Eliquis had a lower risk of clinically relevant bleeding than those taking Xarelto, a recent study found.
Researchers enrolled 2,760 patients with venous thrombosis — blood clots in the veins of the legs or lungs — and randomly assigned them to receive one of the two anticoagulants, according to the study published March 11 in The New England Journal of Medicine.
After the three-month standard treatment course, 7.1% of patients taking Xarelto experienced clinically relevant bleeding, compared with 3.3% of patients on Eliquis.
No difference was found in the risk of recurrent blood clots between the two groups, suggesting both drugs were similarly effective at preventing thrombosis, the study authors said.
The study population comprised mainly white patients with healthy kidney and liver function and without cancer or obesity, and thus the results are not representative of all patients, researchers noted.
