Closed Illinois hospital may receive lifeline

West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, Ill., has been offered aid from another state hospital after payroll challenges tied to its EMR system triggered it to suspend patient services March 27.

Insight Hospital & Medical Center Chicago, part of Flint, Mich.-based Insight Health Systems, has offered to “step in” to maintain the 234-bed safety-net hospital’s services. In 2021, Insight Hospital & Medical Center Chicago, known then as Mercy Hospital & Medical Center in Chicago, was purchased by Insight after it filed for bankruptcy.

“Insight is able to support preserving healthcare services at the West Suburban hospital similar to the role we played in maintaining Mercy hospital,” Atif Bawahab, CEO of Insight Hospital and Medical Center Chicago, said in a statement shared with Becker’s. “Our Insight mission is to step into complex situations and maintain continuity of care for the sake of the community.”

West Suburban’s temporary closure comes after its sister hospital, Chicago-based Weiss Memorial Hospital, closed Aug. 8 amid CMS’ plan to end its Medicare program participation. Both facilities are owned by Chicago-based Resilience Healthcare.

Becker’s has reached out to Resilience Healthcare for comment and will update this story should more information become available.
