Closed California hospital could get 2nd chance

Willows, Calif.-based Glenn Medical Center could have its critical access status restored under a new bipartisan funding agreement, potentially allowing the shuttered hospital to reopen, Action News Now reported Jan. 22.

Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Calif., who died in early January, introduced the legislation that backs the agreement. It aims to secure equitable Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates from the federal government.

“Over the past four months, I have worked across the aisle to prevent Glenn County (Calif.) from losing its only hospital for good,” Mr. Schiff said in a press release obtained by Action News

Glenn Medical Center and its emergency department closed Sept. 30, 2025. The 25-bed hospital was informed by CMS in April 2025 that it had lost its CAH status, which requires a hospital to be located at least 35 minutes from the closest hospital via primary roads or 15 miles via secondary or mountainous roads. The hospital is only 32 miles from Colusa (Calif.) Medical Center, according to CMS.

Glenn Medical’s outpatient clinics have remained open and available for same-day acute care visits.

Becker’s has reached out to Mr. Schiff and Glenn Medical Center for comment and will update this story should more information become available.
