Franklin, Tenn.-based Community Health Systems is expanding its ambulatory surgery center footprint through a mix of acquisitions and de novo development in 2026.
Six things to know:
1. The health system has opened new ASCs in Birmingham and Foley, Ala., and acquired a majority stake in a surgery center in Anchorage, Alaska, bringing its total to 36 affiliated ASCs.
2. That number is expected to rise to 37 following a pending acquisition of Surgical Clinic Solutions, doing business as Surgical Institute of Alabama, in Vestavia, Ala. The multispecialty center performs more than 8,000 cases annually and includes six operating rooms and two procedure rooms. The Surgical Institute of Alabama deal is expected to close in the second quarter, pending customary conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.
3. Effective April 1, CHS also acquired a majority interest in South Anchorage Surgery Center, which focuses on gastrointestinal and interventional pain procedures and supports surgical capacity for Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer, Alaska.
4 In Birmingham, CHS affiliate Grandview Health has expanded its outpatient surgery presence with the opening of Birmingham Musculoskeletal Institute at Grandview Health in April. The system now operates four ASCs in the market.
5. In Foley, CHS affiliate Baldwin Health opened a specialty surgery center in February offering orthopedic, gastroenterology and pain management procedures. The expansion comes alongside a $154 million hospital investment that added inpatient capacity, operating suites and a Level II NICU.
6. Community Health Systems operates 64 hospitals and more than 900 sites of care across 13 states, including physician practices, urgent care centers and ambulatory surgery centers.
“Our targeted investments in ambulatory surgery centers extend our ability to provide care in the most advantageous way for our patients,” CHS CEO Kevin Hammons said in an April 20 news release. “By offering additional services through these outpatient settings, we are driving growth for our health systems, delivering quality care and excellent outcomes, and optimizing the surgical experience for both our physician partners and their patients.”
