BCBS of Minnesota CEO leaves Sutter board over Allina deal

Dana Erickson, BSN, RN, president and CEO of Eagan, Minn.-based Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, has resigned from the board of Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health as the system moves forward with its proposed acquisition of Minneapolis-based Allina Health, both organizations confirmed in statements shared with Becker’s.

Ms. Erickson stepped down from the board March 15, two days before Sutter Health and Allina Health announced the proposed deal, which would create a $26 billion, 39-hospital system spanning California, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Ms. Erickson has been president and CEO of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota since November 2021, overseeing strategy and operations for Minnesota’s largest nonprofit health plan. She previously was senior vice president and president of health services.

She joined Sutter Health’s board in November 2025 but had been recused from all discussions and materials related to the proposed Allina Health acquisition, Blue Cross said in a statement shared with Becker’s. Sutter Health said she did not participate in any matters related to the transaction and stepped down as the organizations moved toward a letter of intent to avoid any potential or perceived conflict of interest.

Lisa Shannon, president and CEO of Allina Health, which negotiates reimbursement rates with and sends bills to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, told Becker’s earlier in March that the proposed deal has been under discussion for about a year.

“Dana Erickson resigned from the Sutter Health board of directors immediately upon learning of an activity resulting in a conflict of interest that could not be mitigated with lesser options,” Blue Cross said. “She had been recused from all content and discussion on this matter. Dana’s knowledge of this topic is limited to the information available in the press release.”
