AACN recognizes 580 hospital units for nursing excellence

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses recognized 580 units from more than 300 hospitals with the Beacon Award for Excellence in 2025.

The Beacon Award honors hospital units that demonstrate excellence in patient care, outcomes and professional practice. Applicants are evaluated across three modules — patient outcomes, work environment and nursing workforce — and must align with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment standards to be eligible. Awards are given at gold, silver and bronze levels.

Three things to know:

1. Sixteen percent of hospital units received gold awards (totaling 92 units), while 74% earned silver and 10% bronze.

2. Hospital units in 43 states and Washington, D.C., were honored. New York led all states, with 80 units receiving Beacon Awards.

3. Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston had 12 units earn recognition — the most of any hospital.
